Polka Party: Celebrating 30 Years of Wisconsin's State Dance

Join the Wisconsin Historical Society, DJ Shotski and DB Polka Express in celebrating three decades of Wisconsin’s State Dance at the all-new History Maker Space during a one-of-a-kind polka party! 

Get ready to hop, jump and shake the night away as we honor the enduring legacy of polka in the Badger State, exploring both the historic past and exciting present of this famous jig. DJ Shotski will play vintage Wisconsin polka records, DB Polka Express will play live music, and there will be dancing, food and drinks, a pop-up exhibit of photos exploring polka history.

Polka time’s state dance anniversary and Vinylthon special

April 21, 6-8 p.m.

Join DJ Shotski for an extended Polka Time episode from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, April 21 to celebrate polka becoming Wisconsin’s state dance.

You’ll hear polka music from Wisconsin artists, polka songs about Wisconsin, and clips from an interview with Governor Tommy Thompson sharing his memories of signing the state dance law in Pulaski in April, 1994.

Vinylthon is a 48-hour marathon of vinyl on the airwaves. Radio stations across the country - including 98.7 WVMO - will celebrate physical media and raise funds for college scholarships.

Come to Cheese Days in Monroe! The biennial celebration of cheese, Swiss culture, and good things in Wisconsin will be extra fun in 2024 when we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the signing of the law that made polka Wisconsin’s state dance.

Cheese Days and DJ Shotski aim to break the world record of the number of polka dancers in a street dance on Saturday, September 21. Sign up now, so we can start counting dancers. To participate in the dance, go to cheesedays.com and register under the Schedules tab. Invite your friends by tagging them in the Facebook announcement post.
